The two will work collectively to create an action plan to respond to decreasing U.S. salmon population.
The Department of the Interior signed three agreements this past week, committing to co-stewarding public lands and waters in Alaska to preserve the decreasing local salmon population. The agreements, signed between Alaska Native Tribes, the Tanana Chiefs Conference, and a corporation that privately manages Ahtna lands in central Alaska, will combine native knowledge with scientific resources to rebuild a resilient ecosystem.
“Since time immemorial, the Yukon, Kuskokwim, and Norton Sound regions have sustained Alaska Native people, fish, birds, and other wildlife, supporting strong and resilient communities and traditional ways of life,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, we can create effective strategies that benefit salmon and all living things who rely on them.”
